WE
ARE, WHAT WE EAT!!!
“We are, what we eat” is an excellent phrase which most of us knowingly ignore.
With
Swiggy’s, Zamoto’s, Uber Eat’s, Foodpanda’s etc, dominating our dining tables, I
felt this would be an appropriate time to write a blog on this subject. Another valid reason which triggers the urge to
pick this subject is the sudden and untimely fatal deaths that we are seeing in the younger
generation off late due to sedentary lifestyle. Life has become so
uncertain and the watchful alarm bells could not have chosen a better time to wake
us up.
From
ancient times our Rishis and Ancestors have advocated the art of eating and
leading a Healthy Life. It is our own
ignorance and overconfidence that we mess up. Instead of evolution we follow revolution and have
become easy prey to medical fraternity.
It would be sensible to revisit what our Rishis and Ancestors had prescribed and imbibe them without further delays. There are 3 types of Human Bodies – Sattva, Tamas,
and Rajas. Balancing the 3 Guna is the
Art of Living! All three
Guna are always present in all beings but vary in their relative amounts. We humans have the unique ability to
consciously alter the levels of the Guna in our bodies and minds. The Guna
cannot be separated or removed in oneself but can be consistently acted upon to
encourage their increase or decrease through lifestyle changes and serene thoughts.
Sattva -
is a state of harmony, joy, delight, happiness, peace, wellness, freedom, love,
compassion, empathy, focus, satisfaction, trust, and gratitude.
Rajas - The nature of Rajas is of attraction, longing, and attachment. Rajas strongly bind us to the fruits of our work. Simultaneously, some of the negative qualities of Rajasic are anger, euphoria, anxiety, fear, irritation, worry, restlessness, stress, and chaos.
Tamas- is a state of
darkness, inactivity, and materialism. Other
Tamasic qualities are laziness, disgust, attachment, depression, doubt, guilt, boredom,
addiction, sadness, apathy, confusion and grief.
To reduce Tamo Guna - We should avoid Tamasic foods,
oversleeping, overeating, inactivity, passivity, and fearful situations.
Tamasic foods include consuming heavy meats, chemically treated foods, processed, or refined
foods.
To reduce Rajo Guna - We should avoid Rajasic
foods, over-exercising, overwork, loud music, excessive thinking, and consuming
excessive liquor. Rajasic foods include fried foods, spicy foods, and
stimulants.
To increase Sattva Guna - We have to reduce both Rajas
and Tamas foods. Consume more of Sattvic foods and be surrounded by people and environment with positive vibes and laughter. Sattvic
foods include whole grains, legumes, greens, fresh fruits and vegetables that
grow above the ground. To sum it up inclining more towards Vegetarian dishes!!
Apparently, it is apt to sign off quoting….“Eat to Live, and Not Live to Eat” because.,
"We are, What we Eat”
